Self oscillating resonance filter

Chances are you've seen an analog synth mention that it has a filter that is "self-oscillating". I had wondered what this meant, until I ran across the feature on my A-Station, patch 291. This is a lead patch. But, unknown to me, made use of the self-oscillating filter.

The specific effect was exagerated by the full distortion that was applied to the patch. Basically, once the filter was oscillating, the filter cut-off controlled the pitch of the oscillation. The specific criteria appeared to be:

  • Distortion at full
  • Resonance at full
  • Filter cutoff at 84 (MIDI CC value)
What resulted was a wicked, techno/house ALERT type sound! WOW, it was powerful. I couldn't stop goofing with it. I will try these settings on my other synths and see what results I get.
