Image Scanners - Quality vs. Resolution

I have seen lots of different information regarding scanners for the PC. Some are sold as super high resolution, super high color depth, blah, blah, blah. There will be argument from the photo crowd that the higher resolution 35mm scanners are needed. That is a valid point. However, Here are the facts:

  • at 4800dpi, that is ACTUALLY: 6614 dots per slide. This is excelent for slides and negatives, however....
  • If we calculate full resolution and color depth, we get a file that is..... 262MB raw data (This assumes (height*width*bit_depth) 6614*6614*48). The contents of which would be 6614x6614 pixels; well out of range of ANY known printer or monitor.
  • Take these images for instance...This one is a scan of the front cover of my Roland SH32 Manual. The original BMP file was 5078x8385x24bit and 121MB small.
  • This image is a clip from the original 600x1200x24bit scan of the manual. This image is 439x788x24bit. Notice the detail and that you can see the individual printed dots in the shaded areas (within the "A10" LEDs, etc).
